Rajnikant shifted to private ward, health parameters normal

Chennai, May 22 : Tamil superstar Rajnikanth was today shifted to a special private ward from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre at suburban Porur where he was undergoing treatment.A press release put out by the hospital late this evening said that all the  actor were normal. 
He also watched a cricket match on television along with his family members.

However, visitors would strictly not be allowed to meet him as per doctors' advise. 

The actor was hitherto being treated in the ICU since May 18. 

''He has been taking food on his own and spending time with his family members and watching television,'' the bulletin said.

The actor was admitted to the hospital on May 13 for acute gastro-intestinal and respiratory problems, and had since been getting treatment.

Peacocks poisoned to death in TN

Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, May 22 : In yet another bizarre incident, forest officials recovered carcasses of six peacocks suspected to have been poisoned to death for devouring crops at Ayynthugramam village near Kalakkad bordering Western Ghats in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.Official sources said on a complaint from the locals that carcasses of peacocks were strewn around the village last night, a forest official team rushed to the village and recovered three carcasses of female peacocks and one peacock in unconscious stage, which died this morning despite providing treatment by veterinary doctors. 

However, due to darkness, the officials dropped the search operation. The officials seized two more carcasses of peacocks from the village, this morning when they began a search operation today taking to number of dead peacocks to six, so far. 

The officials also found the carcasses of at least 26 six hens strewn around the village.

Officials suspect that the peacocks might have been poisoned to death for devouring the crops. The Wesern Ghats housed hundreds of peacocks and they are used to devour crops in the surrounding villages. 

A special team has been formed to trace out the culprit, who had poisoned the birds. Hunting or killing of the birds was strictly prohibited as the birds were listed under schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, the sources said.

Parts of the carcasses had been sent to the Department of Forensic Science of Government Medical College at Tirunelveli to determine the exact type of arsenic that caused the death of Peacocks. 

The forest officials registered a case under Section 9 of the Wildlife Protection Act. 

It may be recalled that a dozen peacocks were poisoned to death by a farmer Mathew Thomas (27) in Surakudipatti village near Tiruchirapalli district yesterday for devouring paddy crops.

Wearing helmets made mandatory from May 28

Chennai, May 22 : Come May 28, compulsory wearing of helmets by two wheeler riders, will come into force and the Chennai City Traffic 
A police press release here said, stringent legal action would be taken against those not wearing helmet under Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.


The city police decision to make wearing helmets mandatory was aimed at reducing the fatalities in road accidents, which has been on the increase.

The city police said the mandatory helmet rule would be implemented in two stages. In the first phase all two wheeler riders should compulsorily wear it.

It would then be extended to the pillion riders also, the release said.

A Government Order, making mandatory wearing of helmets, in Chennai and five other Corporation limits, was issued in February 2007. But it was not implemented strictly.

The police had decided to crack down on improper number plates in vehicle. ''Those number plates which do not comply with the Motor Vehicles Act rules will be dealt with sternly,'' the release said.

Jayalalithaa puts on hold previous DMK govt's uniform education system

j-jayalalithaaChennai, May 22: Temporarily putting on hold the uniform education system implemented by the previousDMK regime, the Tamil Nadu government, headed byAIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, today decided to follow last year's syllabus and A decision to this effect was taken at the first cabinet meet chaired by MsJayalalithaa.

An official release here said the present uniform education system was not enough to raise the standard of the students and would not pave way for the overall improvement of the education system.

Noting that the uniform education system has to be implemented, the cabinet meeting decided to constitute a panel of experts on how to improve the overall standard of education in the state.

"Hence it was decided to follow the last year's syllabus and textbooks for this year also. Since it will take some time for printing the text books, the cabinet decided that the schools can be reopened on June 15," the release added.

The meeting also took some key decisions pertaining to government policies that should be outlined in the Governor's customary address to the newly-constituted Assembly on June 3.

Another resolution thanked the people for reposing faith in AIADMK and voting the party back to power, and installing Ms Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister to take the state onto the path of development, was also adopted at the meeting.
